Clear-bottom kayaks, so the glow is under you as well as around you. Guests who book with us receive a discount code for The Pirate; it’s in your welcome email. Reservations are required; nobody walks up to the bay. Book before you arrive on the island, especially for dark-moon nights in winter, which sell out weeks ahead.
Getting there
The tour meeting point is about 5 minutes from Casa Vieques. Leave the driveway 15 minutes before your check-in time so you’re not hunting for it in the dark, and remember the horses on Route 201 at night.
Wear something you don’t mind getting wet. Skip bug spray and sunscreen that evening: both are toxic to the organisms, and your operator will ask.
A few things we’ve learned
- Book the darkest night early in your stay so a rainy evening still leaves you a second chance.
- If the moon rises during the tour window, ask for the first departure. If it sets during the window, ask for the last one.
- Kayak if you can. Your hands in the water is the whole show. If someone in your group would rather not paddle, Isla Nena Biobay Boat Tours runs the only non-kayak tour on the bay, a 40-minute boat cruise that departs from the Sun Bay entrance on Route 997.
- Turn the pool and terrace lights off when you leave for the tour. Our side of the island looks straight over the bay’s mangroves, and dark skies from every house here are part of what keeps it the brightest in the world.
